Massage chairs relieve back and body pain. They assist with getting deeper and better sleep. Massage naturally increases the body’s immunities and improves blood flow. They have been shown to improve alertness and focus after use. They are a great way to relieve stress, and they just feel great.

Adding a massage chair to your home may not be the cheapest item to add, but the benefits are well worth it. While there are many options out there, one of the best is the Osaki OS-4000.

Zero Gravity Design

Zero gravity design means that it can lay your body into a position where all of the body weight is evenly distributed across the surface of the chair. This doesn’t mean that the person sitting in the chair will become weightless, it more specifically refers to the fact that this position is the same one used when astronauts are launched into space.

The major benefits of chairs that can put the body into this position are improved blood flow, reduce swelling and prevention of varicose veins. Along with the benefits of being in that position, it also allows for your back to make better contact with the chair, so when the massaging system is turned on it makes better contact for a deeper and better massage.

Computer Body Scan

The rollers of the chair need to be positioned correctly for your needs, or the massage isn’t providing what you need. With the touch of a button on the OS-4000 controls, the chair will scan your body as you rest in the chair so that the rollers adjust to the width and height of your body.

By scanning your body, the system can better target the problem areas you have. Neck, lumbar, shoulders and other regions of your body can be focused in on, ensuring the massage given is the most effective for what you need. Most other chairs lack this kind of feature, and therefore lack the ability to provide the massage you actually need.

S Track Massage System

S Track rollers follow the curve or the spine as they do their work. Since your back isn’t perfectly straight, the rollers that you use for a massage shouldn’t be either. The S Track system makes sure that each disc in your back gets equal coverage and decompression as the rollers massage you.

An added benefit of the Anti Gravity design is that it helps the S Track massage system work even more efficiently. With your body leaned back into the chair with your weight evenly distributed from top to bottom, this maximizes the effect the rollers will have. Having the S Track system follow the natural curve of your spine, after having the chair run a body scan, means your massage will be one of a kind and hit every bit of you that it should.

Massage Programming

There are two types of massage programs that can be run with the OS-4000 – automatic and manual. To manually select a massage you can pick between:

  • Swedish
  • Tapping
  • Shiatsu
  • Kneading
  • Rolling
  • Clapping

After choosing a style, the massage will run that way until you turn it off.

Then there are the five automatic programs:

  • Demonstration
  • Stretching
  • Thai
  • Muscle Relief
  • Anti-Stress

After deciding what type of massage you want, you can also choose where you want the massage to be targeted. It can be run for full air, lumbar/back and neck/shoulders. You can switch between massages any time, leaving you in complete control of how the chair operates.

Advanced Foot Rollers

One of the reasons to opt for the OS-4000 rather than its predecessor, the OS-4000, is because of the addition of the foot rollers. These rollers are more advanced than many foot massaging systems because they have been designed to target acupuncture points along the foot. This helps release tension throughout the entire body as it operates.

Another benefit of the foot rollers in this chair compared to others is the fact that they move in a circular motion, rather than a press and release style. By having a spinning roller it prevents the discomfort other massagers may deliver. Using the airbags around the feet along with the massage improves blood circulation through the feet, which can help them recover from soreness faster and more effectively.

Osaki Os-4000 Problems or Negatives

One of the issues I noticed was that the chair has height and size limits. If you’re too tall, or too short, then this chair may not be able to do what you’d like it to. While the chair says it can handle people from 5’2” up to 6’4” it started to get a bit cramped for me at 6’0”. The seat is also a little narrow, so people with broad shoulders may not be comfortable in the chair either.

Another shortfall was the fake leather. It left a bit of discoloration on the floor after it was moved, so be sure to put something beneath the chair to prevent any damage to your flooring. Along with that, this chair is rather heavy, coming in at over 255 pounds in gross weight.

The Verdict

All of the good parts of this chair really outweighed the bad, the massage system is fantastic, the comfortability of the chair was spot on and it truly lived up to the claims. While this chair certainly isn’t for everyone, it would be hard to go wrong buying it if it fits you and your home.

While it’s not the cheapest massage chair on the market, it comes in at a reasonable price for the features you get. Taking the time to learn all of the controls and going through each individual option showed just how variable the OS-4000 really is. The chair also comes great features and covers just about any issue that may arise. Ultimately, if you’re in the market for a massage chair, you need to check this model out for yourself.
